| Beginning |
| Wilfred Sydney Durham, an
English missionary printer and his wife Florence Christiana
Durham, from Gloucester, England, started Gospel Literature
Service in Mumbai, in the year 1939. During the Second World
War, he visited the troops in their camps, and regularly
walked on the sea front of Marine Drive, urging everyone to
yield to the claims of Christ. |
| |
| Conviction |
| The Durhams had come to India
with a burden for printing and distributing Christian
Literature. Wilfred believed that the best way for young
Christians to grow was through Bible study, fellowship and
witnessing. He knew that one good way to witness was through
the distribution of gospel tracts. But in those days, there
was a total embargo on the import of Christian literature
because of the war. So he began to publish them himself. He
also published a magazine called 'Active Service' on a hand
operated Gestetner. Thus Gospel Literature Service began the
publishing venture in 1942 with a vision to bring Christ to
the people of India. |
| |
| Development |
| After the war the focus of
publishing was shifted to the millions of literate Indians.
The work progressed with an R-70 printing machine and it
grew with many Indian brethren joining the ministry. |

| Passing
on the Legacy |
| In 1951, Wilfred Durham, 'the
printer missionary' was called to be with the Lord. However,
Wilf's widow, Florence Christina Durham, a poetess with an
inimitable style, guided the publishing ministry till she
went to be with the Lord in 1987. Over the years under the
able leadership of God's chosen men and the hard labour of
many unsung heroes, GLS has earned a name in the Indian
Christian Publishing Ministry. |
